Hi.
From time to time when a user logs into my W2k Prof. all its settings
are lost. In Documents&Settings a new %UserName catalogue is created
(with .000,.001,etc. extensions) (the formet %UserName catalogue is
left unchanged. I cannot retrive any program information, nor e-mail
client data, nor anything! It just looks like a completely new user
has been created. Why is this so? Can it be prevented? Help, please.

That usually only happens if a user account has been deleted and then recreated or
the operating system has been reinstalled without formatting. The operating system
does not consider that to be the same user because all user accounts crated have a
unique sid. See link below on how to copy profile for which you need to logon as an
administrator. --- Steve

Hello Blasiu,

Another common cause of this problem is that the old profile did not
successfully unload, this is common and typically due to Anti-Virus software
locking the registry portion of the profile because it wasn't finished
scanning, other software can cause registry and profile unload failures as
well. There are some internal isues in Windows that can cause this as well.
Look for the Userenv 1000s that correspond with this issue and I would
advise thIt you install the latest Service Packs and updates listed in the
articles below and see if the issue still ocurs.

Intermittent http://support.microsoft.com/?id=828153

If the above hotfixes do not resolve the problem it is likely that 3rd party
software is causing the profile unload/load failure.
