I am receiving e-mails from foreign addresses, usually saying they want to
share some money with me, but they need my bank account number to deposit the
money - yeah right!!! Is there a way to stop getting these? Thank you

Stop using the computer!

Seriously, you can not prevent someone from e-mailing you if they have your
e-mail address, anymore than you could stop me from sending a posted letter
to you if I knew your post office address. With the latter, you open the
letter - see that it is unwanted mail - then discard the mail.

With the former you can infect your computer just by opening an e-mail if
you are not fully patched. You can buy and install a program such as Mail
Washer which will make most of these junk/good decisions for you.

Some random thoughts on stopping junk email:

First and foremost, change your emailaddy.

I give out a junk email address, even to my friends. That way, if I get
spam--even one--I discard the addy and get a new one. Examples (fake, of
course):

(e-mail address removed) if it starts getting spam, I would change it to
(e-mail address removed), etc.

I also keep a hotmail addy for the rare occasion I want to go somewhere that
I don't trust.

My ISP, BellSouth.net, also protects me. I'm unlucky if I get even one spam
email every three months or so. I can only remember two in the couple of
years I have been with them.

Finally, and I have the luxury of doing this since I am retired, I go only
to reputable websites and only give my email addy to reputable people.

I also have a good security suite that I keep up to date (daily) and run
often.

Since I hate Windows Updates, I don't use it. Using the supplied CDs, I have
installed Win2000 SP4 and IE6 SP1, and count on them and my practices above
to protect me from scum. It works.

Windows Update will do nothing to cause any type of spam. junk Email.
But just the opposite is more likely if your computer has an unpatched
vulnerability because an update was not installed.
Generally only Service Packs come out on CD with a great many other Critical
Updates never available on CD.

Why would you want to stop these? They are the only spam messages that
are sometimes extremely funny to read.

But if you want to stop all spam in your mailbox, get a good spam filter
- either on your web server or web client.
