Forcing Win XP Pro to work offline when connected

Hi,

The default setting of Win XP seems to be that when you
have a network connection to your VPN (either LAN, ADSL
or Modem) that you are seens as connected and 'online'.
This means that all files saved into synched folders are
saved directly to the (in my case) network which can be
very slow. The files are then synched back to the laptop
later - all in all very inefficient, especially when
connected with a modem.

In Win 2k the default seemed to be that you saved the
files locally and they were synched to the servers.
Almost like being offline in Win XP.

Can I set XP to always think that it is offline? I need
my VPN connection for Outlook, printing, etc, but I work
with very large files and frequent saves which can take
up to a minute each.

With any luck I have just configured this wrong, but I
can't find any way of doing it.

Thanks,

Jason.

Take a look at the following KB article... You should be able to get
the required hotfix from Microsoft or your computer manufacturer.

Thanks for the response, Jeffrey.

I'm hoping that setting the GoOfflineOnSlowLink registry
setting will be all I need, as this used to work fine in
Win2k, and nothing but my laptop has changed.

I've made the setting and I'll see next time I'm mobile.
Otherwise it's a try-and-get-the-techie-guys-to-do-
something issue...

Thanks again,

Jason.

There is a workaround that I use. I prefer not to add this patch, as
it is just a minor inconvenince. However, for those who VPN in
remotely, simply boot up and BEFORE you access your vpn open up any of
the shared files on your server. It will then detect that you arent
connected and will give you a warning message that states that you are
working offline (make sure you set up that under the advanced tab for
file synchronizing. if you select "never go offline" then this wont
work). once you are considered offline and then VPN in you will be
accessing the folders off of the cache on your laptop and can avoid
the slow speeds. you will still have access to email, etc. just not
the shared folders. Then, when i am done (if on a fast enough
connection), i click on the computer icon in your taskbar that will
tell you that you have 14 files, for ex, to syncy. hope this helps.
