forcing hardware

ok, this is a heavy duty question.

I have a Compaq presario 4520, which came with win98 and
an onboard nic. I recently did a clean install of win2k
pro, and the network adapter isn't listed(not listed in
dev manager as an unknow device at all). Compaq says they
don't support win2k on this computer and will not even
tell me the make/model of the nic (i remember it was a
DEC).

So if i partition my computer and reinstall win98 using
they're miracle install cd, i would be able not only to
see the make/model of the nic, but i can also get the HW
address and IO it uses.

Assumming i find the driver for 2000, how do i force my
computer to see it? Will the driver make windows 2000
realize it's address?

Just tried, and that is really tough, Compaq made the system is so compact,
that without removing every wire and screw i think it's impossible to see.

Do you think that 98 mode may work?

You can pop the lid and get the FCC ID number off of your nic and identify
it here.

Lot of work for something easy.
go to control panel installing new hardware, instead of
automatically searching for device, select manual and
choose from list, look in the list for your manufactor
find your model of nic card and then state have disc, it
should look in either your a drive or cd depending on
where you tell it to look...

ok, so now i blew it....the driver i found didn't work, no biggie....but
after removing the adapter (device failed to start error code 10) it put in
device manager, my network config is all gummed up.
I dial and connect to my DSL service, recieve an IP but am unable to connect
to anything, no response/name translation on pings, unable to browse the web
etc....any ideas?

From a command prompt;
ipconfig /all
and compare the result with what your ISP thinks you should have. Sounds
like a DNS and or gateway issue.
