This is a bit tricky;
First install of Windows 2000 was on C: Eventually loaded a fresh copy onto
D, but the boot files were still on C. I eventually deleted most of the
windows installation on C, then D became my only Windows install. I made
myself a W2kSP4 disk (Service Pack 4 slipstreamed in) and to test it,
clicked on setup.exe from within windows. It got to the point of 'restarting
your computer' when I cancelled it.
What happened next is a bit of a mystery. I shut down the PC that night,
started it up the next morning. After switching on, I walked away and while
I was gone, the PC booted from the W2kSP4 disk which was still in the drive.
I think that it was trying to resume the setup which I had started from
within Windows. So without my intervention, it begins to install (or
re-install) windows!! I get back to the PC to see it detecting hardware,
which it fails to do and Blue Screens with a 'Bad Pool Caller' error.
So, what happened? Did setup try and do an 'Upgrade' install on my D drive?
It failed to complete setup, and any time I try to boot into the W2k install
on D I get the message 'Setup is resuming' or something like that. It always
crashes out with the aformenntioned blue screen. I've subsequently installed
W2k onto my C drive so I can access my data, and it appears that 'Documents
and Settings' on D is not damaged or overwritten (suggesting an upgrade
install, although it didn't complete?)
What I'm wondering, when I try to boot to D: at what point does 'Setup'
realise that it's still to complete an installation....where does it get
this information from? Would there be a way to trick setup into doing
something else (I don't know what!) ?
I have already used the Emergency repair process to no avail. I know I could
always run setup direct from the CD and install to D:\WINNT but this would
overwrite all my Documents and settings (Yes, I can access them but would
rather not have to re-install all my apps again) so is there a way to force
setup to do an 'Upgrade' install from the W2kSP4 CD?
Oh, and if anyone had any idead on the 'Bad Pool Caller' error, I'de be
pleased to hear as I've not found anything to useful. (I've already stripped
all hardware out except CD and hard drives, plus AGP video card, but still
got Blue screen during Setup)
I just want to get back into my old D:\WinNT install.....
Thanks for any help,
FrankyG
