Have you changed any permissions? You mention you logged
on to "check an application permissions problem" - did
you make any changes (I am mainly intersted in NTFS perms
changes)? Where are your profiles located (by default it
is the C:\Documents and Settings directory but you
could/may have changed it)
Just a thought - I have seen similar thing happen when
you don't have access to at least read the system root
drive or the profiles directory...

Without any errors in the Event Log and the server being
a VM it will be tough to diagnose... Try these:

Check how much free space you have on C:\
Check all Event Logs (App, System, Security) - I know you
said you did not see anything, but check again...
Try logging on with a different account, maybe local
Administrator
Try and telnet into it
Since it is a VM and you don't actually have a console,
could you try and use something like Dameware, or VNC, or
some other sort of a remote desktop app that would let
you get to the "physical" console, then try to logon
there.

Then post the outcomes...
