Have you changed any permissions? You mention you logged
on to "check an application permissions problem" - did
you make any changes (I am mainly intersted in NTFS perms
changes)? Where are your profiles located (by default it
is the C:\Documents and Settings directory but you
could/may have changed it)
Just a thought - I have seen similar thing happen when
you don't have access to at least read the system root
drive or the profiles directory...
