dave h.

I just purchased a new computer with windows xp. I had
a force feedback pro joystick and now I cannot install it
because it says that it is not compatable with windows
xp . Is there a patch that I can download so that I can
still use my joy stick or am I just stuck with a pile of
plastic with a handle on it. I would appreciate any
feedback before I go beserk. Thank you.

Hi Dave H.,

To install the drivers goto the Game Controller Control Panel
Then Add, Microsoft Sidewinder (auto-detect)...

Please note that any Profiling software that came with the gameport hardware
won't work as that was not designed for Windows XP (or 2000). There are
currently no plans for updates.

Hi "fobby",

Here are instructions for both the USB and the Gameport models:

The version 4 software for USB Sidewinders is XP compatible, of
course, you have to be using an administrators account to install it*.
If it gives you a warning, you can click OK and continue installing it.
*Install the software before connecting the device to the USB port!

Version 3 software isn't XP compatible, we'll use XP's drivers instead.
While USB devices just plug and play, GamePort devices need work:

To install a GamePort controller, Plug it in, click Start / Control Panel /
Switch to Classic view if you haven't already / click Game Controllers
Click Add... / Select Microsoft Sidewinder Auto Detect / OK / OK.

This Is what I tried the first time, and it searched for software. Then
told me that it could not find software for my joystick. I have a Force
Feedback Pro stick that plugs into the gameport. I attempted to install
the old ver 3. driver that came with it for 98/me but get an error about
a limitation with my computers resources. Which, of course, is not true.
I even turned off all serial ports and my parallel port to free up
resources and this has not worked. any ideas? all I need is a driver
to run it. I don't care about profiles, heck I don't even care that
much about the force feedback. I would just like it to work.

Hi Sylen,

That method should have worked. Perhaps your gameport
drivers need to be upgraded even if it's part of your sound
card. Indeed the old version 3.0 software will *not* work.

On a side not. If you don't care about forces or configuration software and
would rather not deal with gameports and sound card drivers you should be
able to find a low cost ($10-$20) joystick that will just plug into your USB
port and play.
