Ok someone on the dell forum actually found an updated driver on Dells
website and it is actually in the wrong place but it is for the E520, E521
and a bunch more.
This driver is R173209.exe
it is version 6.10.0.5515

to get it

http://support.us.dell.com/support/...eid=R173209&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=235508

When you go to install it- it will show you all the systems it can go on
If yours is NOT listed just cancel the install.

It works!
as soon as I rebooted about an hour later WU asked me to install sp1

took about 45min with downloading and installing but so far no problems at
all and I have sound

Actually the E520 IS NOT listed in this update, the E521 is...I don't know
if it works on the E520 but since the 520 is an Intel processor & the 521 an
AMD, there could be a difference and, since I have mentioned before the
remove/reinstall route worked for my install (E520) I am no going to mess
with it further.

Hi JustBob30 and Robinb.

Before you install any of these updated IDT/Sigmatel Audio drivers, check if
your "Hardware ID" number of your IDT/Sigmatel HD Audio device is listed in
the STWRT.INF and STWRT.INI files. You can obtain the HWID information of
the IDT/Sigmatel audio hardware by opening the Device Manager window (Click
on "Device Manager" from Vista's "System" control panel app under Tasks),
expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" section, double-click on
"Sigmatel High Definition Audio Codec" or "IDT High Definition Audio Codec"
to view its Properties, click on the Details tab and change the Property that
says "Device description" to "Hardware IDs". then check if the "hardware id"
is listed in the newer STWRT.INF and STWRT.INI files to ensure the
IDT/Sigmatel driver files get updated with no loss of audio in Vista SP1.

examples of certain IDT/Sigmatel HD Audio hardware ID numbers:
hdaudio\func_01&ven_8384&dev_7680&subsys_107b6051
hdaudio\func_01&ven_8384&dev_7618&subsys_80863003

And Microsoft has made changes to the Windows Update "blockers" for Sigmatel
audio drivers mentioned here:
