I have tried to do what you are suggesting, but I cant
stay booted long enough to complete anything. My computer
is shutting down within seconds of starting. Do you have
any suggestions on what I can do or try?

try unplugging your connection, then activating a

firewall, then linking to the patch.
 
The RPC alert has been diagnosed as the W32.Blaster.Worm and removal
instructions are available from this Symantec link:
