footnotes

I'm using Word 2002, and it seems that every time we go
into an existing document, and try to add a footnote, the
footnote number within the document, as well as the number
at the bottom of the page, are not superscript; they are
the same size as the text surrounding it. This happens
most often with Word Perfect files that have been
converted, but it also happens in existing Word files.
But, adding footnotes as you type a new file poses no
problems. Any ideas?

For the documents you are having problems with, you need to redefine the
Footnote Reference Style, which controls the numbers in the main text and
the notes. In my version, you would select a number, go to Format | Style,
see that Footnote Reference is already selected in the left column, click
Modify, use the Format drop down menu to go to Font, and add superscript
formatting. Later versions you might do this through the Styles and
Formatting task pane.
