Footnotes stuck to my keyboard's input language - how to change?

Dear all,

I have a laptop with a French keyboard, but the documents that I am
writing are in English only. It seems that the default behavior with
footnotes is to be in the keyboard's input language. It implies that, each
time I am inserting a footnote, I have to select it and set its language to
English (even when all the other footnotes are already in English). I tried
to remove French from the languages list in Word's options, to select all
footnotes (Ctrl-A) and set the language to English (I clicked also on the
option for setting up English as default), but nothing seems to lock the
language to English and I have to change the language to English each time I
enter a new footnote. Also, when I try to edit the Footnotes related entries
in the style properties, I cannot un-check the automatic language detection
that is checked and grey-ed (even if it is unchecked in Word's general
options).

Any help with that would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Cedric

Note that the "Detect language automatically" option cannot be turned off
for a specific style. Instead, clear the option via Tools | Language | Set
Language (Word 2003) or via Review tab | Set Language (Word 2007).

If it still doesn't work, change the language for the Footnote Text style.
