foolproof fonts?

I know there are thousands of fonts that look pretty but won't appear
correctly unless saved as an image instead of text. There are many fonts
listed in Front Page, some of which I wonder would work online. Is there
any way to know, some definitave list somewhere of fonts that will appear
definately in all or on the majority of browsers? I am needing to add a
font to a website to replace images of a font that I can't identify so can't
recreate/change. I will create new images with another font if nothing
seems suitable, but it sure would be helpful to know if the FP fonts can be
seen by everyone. I've read about WEFT and sIRF, but would rather keep this
as simple as possible for now. Thanks!

The problem is that users must have the font installed on their system, so unless you use something
like WEFT, etc., then you are stuck with using images.

Thanks guys. I ended up sending them to look at the fonts at the ampsoft
website and we together picked one from there that will satisfy all of us.
Clear and easy to read and I don't need to figure out the fancy stuff yet.
This is my first paying job doing webwork, I'd always just helped my husband
on his work website in the past. I really appreciate all the assistance and
guidance from everyone here.
