When I open in Word, my default is Times New Roman at 12pts. However, the
texts comes up at about 14-16pts. When I reduce to 8 points it's more like
12pts. This happens in all fonts. Please advise

Does it come out at 14-16pts when you print also?

If not, your zoom may be at a number higher than 100%, or you have
windows accessibility (magnifier) activated.

My suggestion to you is to open up a file, type in "testing font" or
something like that, and print. If it looks like 12pt (as opposed to the
14-16 on screen) then its definitely a zoom problem.

and if not, post back and we'll trouble shoot from there

hope this helps,
