Font spacing problem

We have one computer in my unit (out of about 900) that has a font spacing
problem in PowerPoint 2007 but not in Word. The spacing is not consistent
and will be wider or narrower between letters.

In PPT 2003 everything is fine.

I noticed that there has been mention of non-MS certified local printer
drivers causing problems. Does this sound like the same problem?

As a clue, I know some updates were recently made to the computer, but as it
is not one that I normally babysit I don't have details.

Many thanks in advance.

Wild guess - is there a font substitution in the offending machine?
That is, a font that is called for in the PPT is missing from that
machine. Windows will make a substitution and not tell you, except if
you look for it.

For more clarity, is this an on-screen issue or a when-printed issue.
It's not clear from your description.

Make sure you have a windows-certified printer driver installed locally and
set as the default printer. PPT 2007 relies heavily on printer drivers for
display.

I know, I know. Don't shoot the messenger.

That is a very good question. It is one of the first things that we checked
out. The fonts being used are all standard fonts, no subs, and are
definately installed on the machine.

Fear not, we aren't taking aim at anybody here. I believe our crew of
wizards has been working on this today. I haven't received a report yet, but
I will forward your comment to them.

I have been thinking about this over the weekend, and the idea of the being
print drivers seems to be more and more likely.

Hi there

I just bought Office 2007 yesterday and am having the same problems. The
spacing between some letters will be non-existent, they will just pile on top
of eachother in an ineligible mess. It is not an issue that can be solved by
amending the font spacing, as it only affects random words, and seems to
affect numbers, and letters before 'e' more than anything. Also using bold is
impossible - as soon as you bold a word it piles all the letters on top of
the first one, correcting it if you un-select bold agian.

It is the same on all fonts, no substitutions are taking place, and I have
no printers installed on this laptop at all.

Help! Oh, also, it can look fine when you do it, but then if you go to
another slide and come back it has happened on the odd world.

I don't get it.

Why not try the suggestion I gave Roger? I mean, you have the "same
problems," so why not give the same suggested solution a shot?

Maybe you didn't see it, although it's right here in the body of this
post -- right below Roger's response below. Here it is again:

Hi. Sorry, I probably didn't make myself clear. I did try that, i.e.
installing a local printer driver, even though I have no printer (as per the
instructions on the link), but it made no difference. (I closed my laptop &
rebooted to see if it made a difference, but not joy. I've deleted the
drivers again now)

Definitely something odd going on there, then.

Which printer driver did you install?

Also, the fact that it changes when you change slides leads me to believe
you could also need to update your video drivers and maybe see if changing
hardware acceleration affects your display.

Hi All,
This suggestion worked. Thanks a lot!!!
I have Office 2007 and Windows 7. A Power Point ppt downloaded off the web was giving me a lot of font and spacing issues and my default printer was set to an old Dot Matrix one - changing this did the trick!!
Who'd have thought of it?
