I put up a webpage with a font I like -- Jenkins 2.0 (I know it's not the
most ubiquitous font, but I'm mostly putting up the site for myself and my PC
has the font). When I accessed the site from my laptop, I was surprised to
find that the font defaulted to Times New Roman. I checked the fonts on that
machine (in Front Page, the same program I used on the PC). and it doesn't
have Jenkins 2.0. It struck me as odd because the computers have the same
general setup -- XP Pro SP2, updated office, etc.

So, my question:

Why do I not have that font on the laptop?
- Might I have gotten that font on the PC from some other program and Front
Page just "accessed" it?
- Might it be that the computer itself can't handle that font (even though
it has the same O/S, etc.?

Thanks...

Any font that is available on a machine can be seen by FP on that machine
when creating pages. However, you should stick to fonts that are standard
fonts across multiple operating systems, normally you'll find just about
everyone has Verdana, Arial, Times New Roman, and Courier. Others depend
upon what the OS comes with and what additional applications are installed.

Nope, it's most likely that it doesn't have the font. XP doesn't come with
it, nor does Office XP. Have you got a DTP app installed?

Thanks for your reply.

Don't know what a DTP app is, so I probably don't have it installed.

What's confusing is why the PC has the font and the laptop doesn't. Only
thing I can think of now is that I loaded a MovieMaker2 extra effects type
package from microsoft's website. Wonder if it was in there.

How would I copy fonts from one computer to another (I have a network, so
the actual transfer is easy -- I just don't know how I'd find the font).

Thanks.

Desktop Publishing - eg MS Publisher, Quark Xpress.

Possible.

Go to Control Panel -> Fonts, find the font, right click and choose
Properties. The box at the top will contain the filename. Then you can copy
that file from c:\windows\fonts on that PC to somewhere on the other PC (not
the c:\windows\fonts dir). On that PC go to Control Panel -> Fonts, from the
File menu choose Install New Font, find the TTF file you just copied and
choose it.

However, this will still only cure the laptop. Any other machine looking at
your pages that doesn't have the font installed will just see Times New
Roman. If you want to make your pages look the same no matter which PC looks
at it, try using a font that is commonly available on the majority of
machines. Try http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/WindowsMacFonts.html for a
handy list.
