Good luck, Ryan. I have over 75 fonts and have yet to figure out which
ones I can safely get rid of. And, like you, the numbers keep growing each
time I install a program. The ones with a red "A" seem to be used by Windows
itself and should probably not be deleted. Certainly some of the ones with
"TT" are TrueType fonts, but I have no idea what the colors mean. The "O"
fonts are Microsoft's own OpenType fonts. Of course, none of this will
really tell you which ones you can safely delete. While a particular font
may not be used by Windows itself, some of the fonts are used by the various
programs installed on your computer (splash screens, dialogs, and other text
within the program). If you delete a font needed by a program, the results
can be unpredictable (but rarely good).

If you feel really brave one day, you can remove all of them (except the
ones with a red "A") and then start opening various programs. If the program
complains (and does so with something you can understand - such as this or
that font is missing), you can then put that font back. Once you get
everything working, you can then choose which of the remaining fonts your
really want to keep and throw the rest away (but hang onto them for a while
to make absolutely sure you won't need them for some program you forget to
try earlier).

Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine. I've searched the internet for
a solution, but the suggestions seem to conflict with each other (some say
to trash a font others say to keep). Perhaps someone else has found the
answer. I'll keep watching this thread to see. Take care.

Are the fonts in the way? If not, why delete them? Most of the ones you
mention in a later post are standard fonts, code page fonts for language
support or ones installed by specific programs. Deleting a font is not an
earth shattering move but if a program depends on a removed font, you
could end up with weird menus and window components in that application.

NOTE: You can pick out the XP installed fonts by the date modified.
8/23/2001 and a time stamp of 6AM is what's shown for the US version of
the original XP files. Also, icons in the Font folder with a shortcut arrow are
"installed fonts" but reside in another location on the hard drive.
