Font *how-to* question (again!)

Thanks to Sharon, I've already improved things a lot, but I desperately need
to sort out and rename a large number of jpegs and mp3's.
How can I make these (or, better!) all my folder's contents *BOLD* so that
I can read them more easily?

Also, how do I make the font *BOLD* in (for example) the *Switch Identities*
box?
(Is this a *Message box? If not, what is it called...?)

FWIW, I am already using large fonts, and do not want to use extra large.
With macular degeneration you need fonts more *solid* as the *spindly* ones
just look even more so, even to the point of disappearing altogether!!

What it _really_ needs is the ability to right click an area (for example an
open file) and have the choice to **make _all folders (or whatever) _ like
this** with the choice to change font and/or bold it.

Being in a similar visual situation, I did the following... You may want a
friend to help with this. Go to Control Panel>Display>Settings tab>Advanced
button (above "Apply"). In the next dialog box, click on each item in the
drop-down menu under "Item". Be sure to WRITE DOWN the old settings so that
you can always restore them. You will be able to set colors and font styles
including Bold IF there is a font for the item.

This is my setting, just for an idea; 14-16 pt Verdana Bold for where I can
set them. "Play" with them. Your changes appear as set in the dialog box.
Write down changes. You can always go back in if unhappy with how thing
have been reset.

HTH,

Malv

Hi Malv, thanks, but that is more or less about where I've got to.
You certainly need to write them down!!!

Do you have any idea regarding specifically:

**I need to sort out and rename a large number of jpegs and mp3's.

BTW, I _did_ find out that making *Icons* bold means that *read* messages
still look *unread* !!!
........OOPS :-)

I've just been experimenting again and it seems that *Icons* _is_ the
selection that does what I want to with regard to folder contents, but, as I
said, it then makes it impossible to know what I've read in OE.
The dull thudding sound you hear is my head banging on the desk...

Have you considered trying a different news reader?

Xnews was created by someone who needed better visibility in their
newsreader. It's no longer being developed but it's a good sturdy little
app that still works well for many folks. I have never tried it but it has
a loyal following. It is currently being hosted here:
http://xnews.newsguy.com/

I am currently using 40tude's "Dialog." I also have Forte Agent. Both of
these programs allow:

-Separate settings for font characteristics of the message list, messages
and newsgroups list. Dialog allows you to customize program elements
(column headers, menus, etc) as well.

-Zoom feature: maximize any of the 3 panes (newsgroups, message list and
message); easily toggle back to 3 pane view

-Configure the program with custom background and foreground colors choose
color combinations that are kinder to your eyes and easier to read.

Dialog is currently in beta and free (author accepts donations):
http://www.40tude.com/dialog/

Agent has a 30 day trial. At the end of 30 days, you can purchase the
program and maintain access to all features. Or you can continue using it
for free but in "limited" mode: http://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php

I like both of these programs very much and use them both to read the
Microsoft newsgroups from the MS servers. I find myself using Dialog the
most. It combines my favorite features of Agent and Outlook Express.

There are many more readers available - some free, some shareware. A good
site to keep up on news readers is:
http://www.newsreaders.com/

Newsgroup support for most readers can be found here:
news.software.readers

Agent newsgroup:
alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent

If your ISP does not provide a usenet feed, you can check out these groups
via googles groups. Or subscribe to a news service.

Acually, I _do_ use Xnews, but almost exclusively for downloading music.
:-o)
I even use bold fonts with it!!
I remember in the early days of using it that I wasn't too keen on it as a
*news* reader, and I went back to OE for that purpose.
Perhaps I should now give it abnother try, as I have it set to mark the
*Read* posts *Red*, if you see what I mean!
What a shame you can't do that with OE. :-((

I had tried *Agent* before I found Xnews, (which I prefer, for binaries,
anyway).
I'll have a look at Dialog

I've nearly got things the way I want them now!
Thanks again for you input.

I think you got the bold issue fixed. About marking *as read*... OE has
its own setting to do this after a specifiefd time--but only for e-mail, as
far as I can determine. I can't find it right off-hand. I set mine for a
minute way-back-when.

For renaming lots of similar files, open Search, type in *.jpg (or any other
extension) and let it make a list. Then go to View>Thumbnails to get a
miniature picture, then single click an item you want to change name of and
type it in, or write down location and go into the folder itself.
