In a recent Microsoft post, it suggested modifying XP for best performance
and provided "guided" assistance to do so. I went through the steps, and came
out with my screen fonts looking worse than they did before. I tried to undo
the steps I'd followed, but have not managed to get back the display
properties I had before - I don't know what got changed that made fonts
slightly fainter and with a tendency for the serifs to fade. It's very
subtle, but enough to be annoying. I've tried every variation I can think of
in order to try to get fonts to look better again, including choosing "best
appearance." Does anyone have any ideas here?

Thanks, Claymore, but I'd rather not do something so drastic. It's been a
number of days since I made the change and who knows what other things will
get lost if I restore my system to back then. In fact, I've installed some
software since then. I just want to know a simple command that will fix the
font display.

It's a long shot but how about going into Display Properties
and changing your theme from the current one to another and
then back to your current theme. You might also want to change
from "best appearance" to "Let Windows chose what's best for my
computer.

Good luck

Thanks for the ideas, Nepatsfan, but I'm afraid I've "been there, done that."
Didn't make any difference.

At one point a saw something about Cleartype when I was fiddling with my
visual performance, but I can't find it again. Does anyone know if this would
affect the quality of my screen fonts, and how I can change whatever-I-did
back to the way it was?

If you have a CRT monitor, ClearType could cause the text under
desktop icons to look a little blurry. To check if you've
enabled ClearType, do the following.

Go to Control Panel and double click Display.
In Display Properties, click on the Appearance tab.
On the Appearance tab, click on the Effects button.
In Effects, look under "Use the following method to smooth
edges of screen fonts" and make sure it's set to Standard.

Good luck

Nepatsfan

Hmmm, but did you try enabling Cleartype?

| No luck. It was already set to Standard. So obviously ClearType's not the
| problem, huh.

Ok, I tried that, Rob, and it made no difference.

One other thing that's noteable: there's a rusty tinge to the colour of my
fonts in many cases. Like, as I'm typing this the type doesn't look pure
black. Other fonts, often italics, are very faint.

HELP! Please can someone resolve this for me. I fear we're all
experimenting, and as much as I appreciate the ideas and the time you're
taking to try to help, I sure would like someone to leap in with the ANSWER.
Please, is there an expert out there who can help me?

Hmmm...ok I'll throw out one more idea;

That created SOME improvement, Rob, but I'm still getting fading at the edges
of certain characters. I notice that MS says ClearType "improves the
readability of text on existing LCDs (Liquid Crystal D isplays), such as
laptop screens, Pocket PC screens and flat panel monitors," and my monitor is
not in that category. It's your old-fashioned great big clunky thing with
rounded screen (vintage 2001).

What I'd really like to know, I think, is how to turn my display settings
back to the defaults - i.e., the way the monitor was set up when I first
hooked up my computer. Anyone know how to do this?

Right click a blank spot on the Desktop and choose Properties.
On the Appearance tab click Effects.
There you can turn off Clear Type.

Well, actually, Frank, that wasn't really a problem. My original question was
about why my screen fonts looked weird after running the MS Guided Help
program that's supposed to improve performance. But... I tried your
right-clck idea and went first of all to Graphics Properties to see what was
there. I noted that my monitor was set to High Colour, so I changed it to
True Colour to see what would happen. By George, I think I've got it!! I do
believe my screen fonts are back to normal again. I don't know what the
difference is, but that seems to have worked.

I think my problem's solved, guys. Thanks for all your contributions. (I
must write this down... High Colour doesn't suit my monitor.) Merry Christmas!

Glad you got it sorted.
High Color is 24bit, True Color is 32bit...some programs can't handle 32 and
downlevel it to 24 anyway.
