The previous help on downloading SP1a helped a lot. Thank you.

It turns out I picked up a virus (w32.welchia.worm) while downloading
updates from MS!

Now, I have new problems. At least a few of my Windows XP files has been
lost, as I no longer have a Restore tab under My Computer-Properties. I have
to assume there are more. Is there any way to check for those file, as well
as obtain them, without another complete install?

Also, during boot, after POST, I get a message; Invalid boot.ini, though the
system still boots.

What is this and how do I fix this?

Thanks again.

Did you download this Microsoft update from an email you received? This is
the only way you are going to get a virus from 'Microsoft'. These emails
are not from Microsoft and should be deleted without opening the attachment.
Having said that if you are sure the virus has been eliminated then do a
repair install from your XP CD which will add / overwrite the system files
without losing any of your data.

Ack. Maybe I'm getting dense. My Windows XP Home disk won't allow me to just
repair an installation.

Boot to CDROM
ENTER-to install
R-to exit to Recovery Console
Esc (I think) to exit.

I hit Enter to go to the Install options

Then it doesn't give me a choice of a repair, it wants me to choose a
partition to install to...

ACK, this looks like a problem...

If you have an OEM reinstallation CD, you may not be able to perform a
repair install.

For the proper procedure to perform a repair installation using a retail CD,
see the following website.

Ok (sigh)

I did the upgrade and re-installed XP two days ago. I activated the new
install yesterday (by mistake). I don't have the OEM, I have full Retail XP
Home, but apparently my install is so corrupt that I have to re-install
again. Hench the absence of the Repair option.

I'm pretty sure I will have to, again, activate my XP, will MS give me any
grief about that?

No, you won't get any grief from MS. If it has been more than 120 days since
you last activated, you will be able to automatically activate over the
internet. Less than 120 days and you will need to manually activate by
telephone which takes about 5 minutes and is not a problem.
