Just to let you know I finished up OK :-)
Near the end of the thread I said :
Thanks for your help so far, Now that I have WinXP up and running.
I need some more hand holding, before I try to recover the missing 20Gb
with
WinME on it. Part of your reply was :
"Boot with WinXP CD, hit "r" to load recovery console.
from command prompt run bootcfg /add"
(should see WinME and offer to add it to boot menu)"

For some strange reason I only got to type, b, then nothing else appeared.
It didn't look like a command prompt, and the offer was on the screen; Do
you want to boot to Win XP, so I accepted that.
I tried to install Boot Magic, but was informed that it was already on a
hidden partition, and would have to be uninstalled from that first. Then I
remembered that "PQ Boot" was installed as part of Partition Magic, so
opened that and both WinXP and WinME were listed. I selected WinME,
rebooted, and bingo.
Found that Boot Magic (installed in WinME) was disabled, changed that and
can now boot into either OS.
Thanks again for all your help, it put me on the right track.

No problem, glad you got it worked out.
