What does it take to get Explorer to display ALL the folders on my drives?
My AV reported an infection in a sub-folder under C:\Documents and Settings,
and according to Explorer, Documents and Settings doesn't exist on C: drive.
I had to boot into Safe Mode and use a third party Explorer type program
(Total Commander) to even display the folders. Is there any way to just get
Explorer to display everything on the drive? I've already unchecked the
hide option under the Tools menu.

Hi,

Folder Options/View

Uncheck "hide protected operating system files"
Check "show hidden files and folders"

The folder being referenced, C:\Documents and Settings, is not a folder in
Vista. It is a junction point that redirects to C:\Users. That is where you
should be checking.

I did as you suggested, and I still can't find the folder. I unchecked
"hide protected operating system files", I don't see an option to "Show
hidden files and folders". The folders I'm looking for are "Application
Data" and "AppData". I know they're there, because I can see them with
Norton in Safe Mode. This is really getting frustrating. I neither need
nor want to be protected from myself. All I want to do is open Explorer (or
anything else for that matter) when I'm logged on as a normal user and be
able to see every last item on my HD. That doesn't seem to be too much to
ask.

Thank you:

Hi,

Norton is referencing an older Windows folder structure, as it was in XP.
Vista does_not_have a C:\Documents and Settings or Application Data folder,
they are legacy names reflected in junction points that redirect hard-coded
software to the applicable folders used in a Vista system. You should see
them as shortcuts, this is how junction points appear. The former (D&S) on
the root which redirects to C:\Users, the latter under each %userprofile%
directory that redirects to %userprofile%\appdata. You are getting
frustrated because you are looking for something that does not exist.

The option to "show hidden files and folders" is only a few lines above the
other line you already found, unless perhaps you are on a domain and your
admin has removed certain functionality.
