Folders without index.html

You get a list of all files and folders within a folder if you go to it, if the folder doesn't have an index.html-file, if I've got it right. But can you get to that list if the folder does have an index-file?
This is maybe not the right place to post this, but I didn't know where to ask.

Index.html
Index.htm
Default.html
Default.htm

are frequently used by web servers as the possible names for a file which is
displayed when the user simply types example.com without a specific page
name. However all web servers as far as I know let the administrator change
this if he / she wishes to.

If there is no default *.html file (or whatever) the server "May" show a
list of files but again the option is set by the server Administrator, most
of whom probably do not permit visitors to list files although the ability
to do so may be a default on many servers.

So, in short it depends on the server settings as well as whether a default
page exists.

Hope this helps.
