Folders Open Incorrectly After Enabling Print Directory

James

I followed the instructions in the Help Center for adding
the command to print a directory to the Folder Options.

This involved typing some script into WordPad and saving
the file as prin.bat in the Windows folder.

This worked, allowing me to print the contents of a
folder. However, after setting this up, every folder now
insists on opening in its own window, rather than opening
in the existing window. This persists despite Folder
Options being set to always open in the same window.

I tried removing the prin.bat file, but this did not
correct the problem.

Any ideas? Thanks.

James,

See if registering shell32 helps. Type "regsvr32 /i shell32" in the Run box.

Ramish! That fixed it! Thank you very much!

So do you think it's okay for me to put the prin.bat
thing back in place now so I can print the contents of a
folder, or will that just cause the problem to come back?

Thanks again,

James

James,

That won't cause the problem. Put the file back if you want.

But you'll need to run the fix after adding the additional command. The problem is caused by a bug in the dialog box where you are adding the command. If you do anything here you need to run the fix afterwards - the dialog thinks it an older version of Windows and adds the correct info for that older version.

It's to do with how objects inheirit verbs. Older versions had to have nothing in a particular place while XP needs the word "none". Directories (aka File Folders) inheirit the Open and Explore commands from Folders. By not having the word "none" as the default command it falls back on newer ways of determining which verb is the default.

James,

That won't cause the problem. Put the file back if you want.

Ramish! That fixed it! Thank you very much!

So do you think it's okay for me to put the prin.bat
thing back in place now so I can print the contents of a
folder, or will that just cause the problem to come back?

Thanks again,

James

But you'll need to run the fix after adding the additional command. The problem is caused by a bug in the dialog box where you are adding the command. If you do anything here you need to run the fix afterwards - the dialog thinks it an older version of Windows and adds the correct info for that older version.

It's to do with how objects inheirit verbs. Older versions had to have nothing in a particular place while XP needs the word "none". Directories (aka File Folders) inheirit the Open and Explore commands from Folders. By not having the word "none" as the default command it falls back on newer ways of determining which verb is the default.
