I have no idea what triggered this, but all my folders now open in a "search
window" view. The only way I can open them now is to right click on the
folder to open then click "open" on the dropdown menu. What can I do to get
back to my click to open???

This problem occurs when you alter the "Drive" / "File Folders" entries via
File Types dialog, to add a "Command Prompt here" or "Print Directory"
feature for drives / folders. (example)

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321186

Resolution:

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix this problem:
(Tip from David Candy)

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

-or-

Fix "Search" Opens Instead of Explorer:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_folder_open.htm

-or-

To fix this manually via registry:

If this problem is seen for Drives:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
Set (default) to "none" (without ")

If this problem is seen for folders:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
Set (default) to "none" (without ")

Thanks Ramesh. I tried the first two fixes and now the option which comes up
is "Do you really want to erase files?" which is a shredding program that
attached itself to all folder context menus. I went into the registry and I
have no "directory" or "drive" selections where you advised. I do see a
".dir" and a ".drv"....are these the folders you speak of? Their default
entry in both of them are "REG_sz"

Hi Ramesh. The first two fixes, while reporting success, actually did not.
They just moved the open to a shredder that put itself in every folder
context menu. So now, they all display a box message: "Are you sure you want
to erase files?" which is the top entry on every folder context menu
including drives. I went into the registry and do not have "directory" or
"drive" in the tree for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. There is a .dir and a .drv
folder.....are these the right ones? They have "REG_SZ" in both defaults
presently. Just replace that with "NONE" ?

Thanks, Brian

Sorry Ramesh....I found the folders way down in the tree....guess what? They
both say "none" when I click on modify. Do I have to restart after the other
two fixes???

Search the registry for "Directory" key and you'll get to the following
location:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory]

Repeat the same for "Drive". If the entries are *really* missing, then apply
the Directory association fix from here:

Export and post the contents here. Use the File, Export option to export.
