Folder views don't stick

MICHAEL

I go through a lot to get folders to look the way I want them.
Some folders I want a certain way, others another way.
Vista loves rearranging them for me. :-(

This didn't seem to be as bad before. The longer I use Vista
the flakier some things seem to be getting. Perhaps, I'm less
forgiving... I don't know.

Also, every other day, when I go to access a network folder,
I get "Network Discovery is not on", I turn it on. I've turned
it on a hundred times. It will be fine a day or two, then not.

Just curious...is this a clean install or an upgrade?

Michael--

I can't be sure of Vista although we can try. I can tell you how this works
in XP. In XP, the settings are remembered for up to 400 folders. These are
controlled by reg subkeys. Kelly has a tweak for this in XP, but I don't
know how it holds up in Vista.

Increase folder setting size to 8000
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/bags8000.reg

The reg subkeys are these:

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:00001f40

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:00001f40

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000

Thanks, Chad.

I may have a go at this later.

Up until about 3 or 4 weeks ago, it was an upgrade from
RC2. I had always intended for Vista RTM to be a classic
clean install. But, I wanted to test the upgrade procedure one
more time. That went flawless and everything worked well.
However, I kept thinking what if it was even a bit better if I
did a clean install. The transferring of files was really starting
to get on my nerves and thought, just maybe, a clean install
would fix/improve that. So, I did a classic clean install.
Oh well, if it ain't broke, don't break it.

Actually, except for a few irritating things, Vista does run rather
well.

I've run sfc /scannow and nothing is corrupted. Oh well.
There's always WinXP Pro in VPC 2007. That runs great
on Vista. :-)

Take care,

Michael

Vista is set to 5000, as was the case with SP2 in XP. I have seen
situations where it helped to increase it beyond 5000 to 8000 in XP. I
think 8000 is the max (but I'm not sure on that).
