Folder view hacks?

I'm a bit dissappointed that XP does not allow for the
customizing of folders like previous versions allowed
with the editting of the desktop.ini and folder.htt files.
From what I have read so far, the *few* folder view
configurations in XP are the only choices we have.

Are there any hacks to the shell that can allow total
control over the customizing of the folder views? I know
there has to be a few of you out there who have conquered
this. Please share your knowledge.

Thank you.

Well it doesn't seem to work for me. Have you actually
gotten it to work for you?
I've done this in ME and 2k but I cannot get this to
happen under XP (Pro).
Hmmm......

Yes it works. The folder must be Read Only or System, neither can be set
through the GUI.

XP took away 2000/ME's dialog and provided it's own - everything works on
95/NT4 with IE4 or later - it's just the dialogs give different options in
different versions - but all options work).

1. Customise the folder with any icon (2000/ME supports this as well but
doesn't provide a dialog), this creates a desktop.ini and sets the folder
Read Only. Copy your custom desktop.ini into the folder.

2. Use attrib to make the folder Read Only or System. Copy your Desktop.ini
in.

3. Custom folder templates (only) are only read when there are no saved
settings. So reset you settings for these to be noticed.

4 Clonesoft provides a dialog to edit desktop.ini. They've lost their domain
but were at www.clonesoft.com. I saw some crap at ZDNet with clonesoft in
the name so try searching there.
