When I open a main program folder such as, "quicktime" or
a program I downloaded from the internet such as "Find
duplicates", and then try to open a file in it that has
the windows icon, I get the message that windows cannot
open this file because it needs to know what program
created it. And gives the options that windows can try to
find it on the net or, I could try to find myself among
my programs.I let windows do it and sometimes that works
for the ext. For example, in the files property this is
listed, newdup.lis, type= lis, opens with= unknown
application. In the change dialogue box do I just enter
the main name again, newdup.lis, or is there a certain
application that opens it that I need to find? TIA

Jeanie, if I had to guess, I would say the "newdup.lis" would translate to
"New Duplicates, a list file." The *.LIS extension is not a standard
generic extension. It is probably an extension created by and used by the
"find Duplicates" program specifically.

It is also very likely that you should not open the newdup.lis file
directly. It is more likely, that you would view the file's contents from
within the dup finding program. In other words, launch the program and then
use its menu commands to load and view the list of duplicate/new duplicate
files that it has recorded.

You might find an "Export List" command under the File menu. That command
should output a file that you can read directly. Check the programs help
files for more information.

TIP: Not all files are meant to be opened directly by the user. Many files
within a program's folder work only within the program's interface or are
used solely by the program (code for the various program functions to
operate).
