Why on earth doesn't Windows Explorer show the sizes of Folders shown in the
right hand pane as well as the sizes of individual files listed there?
Strikes me that an additional column or two in the Explorer window giving
the number of files in the (unopened) folder and the total size of that
folder would be a big advantage.

The reason is that calculating folders sizes can take considerable time if
the folders are large and deeply nested.

Nevertheless, there are many alternative file managers out there that do
offer this service. For example XYplorer (http://www.xyplorer.com/): simply
right-click the Size column header in select "Show Folder Sizes".
