Folder shortcuts in Network Places

I have a home network of 3 computers. In My Network
Places on my own computer, I have folder shortcuts to the
shared folders on the other 2 computers (my children's
upstairs), but not my own shared folder. If I create a
shortcut by either dragging and copying it or Adding a
Network Place, opening it causes the whole window to
disappear, and after a moment I'm back to the desktop.
Also, on returning to My Network Places I find that the
folder icon has changed from a shared folder icon to a
normal folder icon. My shared folder can be seen in My
Network Places on the other 2 computers. One of the
computers can see its own folder, but the other cannot.
The one that can, and my computer are both on XP Home;
the other is on XP Pro. Also, if I share another folder
on my computer, it does not appear in My Network Places
(Local Network) on my computer, but it does on the other
computers. Has anyone experienced anything like this
before, or do they have any idea what the problem is?
Most peculiar!

I have exactly the same problem and so do a lot of other
people but there seems to be no answer

Another thing I've noticed is that on both computers
with the problem, when the window suddenly closes, some
taskbar tray icons disappear.
Anyway, I have found a workaround which is to create a
new folder on the local drive and share it. It then
appears in the folder listing of the workgroup, into
which I dragged my shared docs folder, creating a
shortcut. That shortcut can then be dragged into My
Network Places, creating another shortcut. Right click it
for properties and change the icon to the shared folder
icon which other entries have. Then delete the newly
created folder on the local drive. This shortcut in My
Network Places then behaves normally, though it doesn't
appear in the folder listing in the left window.
