Folder Setting Fails to work

I've just reinstalled my Windows Xp Home edition, after
some configuration the folder setting seems not doing
what it says. In the "Folder options", I picked "open
each folder in the same window", but in practice it just
doesn't work. The relevant problem is that double click
on the folder icon brings up the "search" window instead
of opening up the folder. I had to go to the "Control
Panel" >> "Folder Option" >> "File Types" and set the
default actions manually to "open". Does anyone here have
got the same problem before or has any idea what's going
on with my XP? thank you.
