Hello,

I'm currently using folder redirection to redirect to a network share
folder like the Desktop.

Everything is working fine, however if the network connection to the
share is loss for any reason, all the icon on the Desktop that are residing
on the network share will dissapear (which may be normal since the network
connection is lost).

However, the problem is that when the network connection is reestablish,
the icon doesn't reappear. The only way to reestablish the desktop is to
logon/logoff.

Is there a way to prevent that, or to rescan the desktop when the
network connection is reestablished?

Thank

Michel Lapointe

Dear Micheal,

Thank you for your post.

I understand that when your network connection to the server is
disconnected, all the icons on the desktop are missing. However, after the
network connection is re-established icons are still missing. You need to
logoff and then logon the computer.

Generally speaking, when the network connection is re-established desktop
icons are refreshed. Please check whether users can access the network
share on the server. In addition, please run the following command line to
refresh IP information:

Ipconfig /release
Ipconfig /renew

In addition, I suggest that you use the Offline Files technology to enable
the user to do useful work even when the user is not connected to the
network temporarily. In this way, users will not notice the disturbance of
network disconnection. Offline Files does not depend on Folder Redirection.
It is set up and configured on shared network servers separately from the
Folder Redirection snap-in.

For more information about Folder Redirection and Offline Files, please
refer to the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechn
ol/windowsserver2003/proddocs/standard/Folder.asp

If anything is unclear, please feel free to post back. Have a nice day!

Thank for the suggestion.

1. This is a fix ip address.
2. User have full access to share when network connection is reestablished
3. Offline is activated

Redirection is done to a DFS share if it change anything...

Any other suggestion? Since the desktop or application data (Quick Launch)
is not refreshed...

Thank

ML

As simple as this one: put focus on the desktop (click on it) and hit F5 to
refresh contents. Here's your good old desktop, the only thing is the
wallpaper which may not reappear sometimes.

I will try it...

Any solution that also work for Win2000 and Win2003 Server?

Thank

ML

Dear Micheal,

The quick launch bar shortcuts are stored in the "Documents and
Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick
Launch" folder. I would like to confirm that you have configured the group
policy to redirect the "Application Data" folder to the network folder.

In addtion, please perform the following stesp to refresh the Quick Launch
bar manually to test this issue again:

1. Right click any space on the taskbar, and uncheck Toolbars -> Quick
launch.
2. Recheck the Quick Launch item.

Generally Windows 2000 & 2003 does not have the symptoms that are described
in the Q823291 Knowledge Base article. This issue seems to be reported only
for Windows XP client.

If you have any updates, please feel free to let me know.

Have a nice day!

Thank Laura,

The Application Data folder is redirected and working fine (except for the
refresh)

The refresh mecanism by checking unchecking work fine also with an
exception, it doesn't rembember the other of the toolbars, in consequence
I've to reorder all the toolbars.

I'm experiencing this behavior with 2003 as well as XP, I believe that I've
the same issue with 2000, but won't be able to confirm it before tonight

Is the XP fix suppose to correct this behavior or just the desktop one?

Thank

ML

Just a thought. Do you have a large number of items on the
desktop/QL? Could you have exceeded to initial size limit of the
shelliconcache?

Just musing...

Hello Mark

Good question... will have to look what is the value of the cache,
however there is not that much item in number... size may be something else

Hello Laura,

What a weird design... if at least the quick launch was remembering it's
position it would'nt be that bad.

BTW are you sure the end of your email is relevant for this reply?

1. This is not about outlook
2. This is not about offline file with RAS, neither about browsing

ML

Hello Laura,

No more concern, BTW the outlook reference was made not in regard to the
KB but from your answer.

However I still feel that the quick launch refresh mecanism is flaky, I
will live with it

Thank

Dear Micheal,

I am sorry that I made a lapse of the pen in my previous post. However,
the channel to submit MSWish is still valid. To submit great ideas for a
future product enhancement. I'd recommend that you forward the
recommendation to the Microsoft Wish Program.

There are several ways to submit MS Wish:

World Wide Web - To send a comment or suggestion via the Web, use one of
the following methods:

" In Internet Explorer 6, click Send Feedback on the Help menu and then
click the link in the Product Suggestion section of the page that appears.
" In Windows XP, click Help and Support on the Start menu. Click Send your
feedback to Microsoft, and then fill out the Product Suggestion page that
appears.
" Visit the following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/ms.htm

" Click Microsoft.com Guide in the upper-right corner of the page and then
click Contact Us . Click the link in the Product Suggestion section of the
page that appears.
" Visit the following Microsoft Product Feedback Web site

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

and then complete and submit the form.

Have a nice day!
