Hi, I am trying to set up folder redirection.

I have went to Active Directory Users and Computers and went to the
properties of the domain -> group policy -> edit. From here I went to
folder redirection settings and My Documents -> properties.

I have a domain\test_group. I put a user in that group. I put the
group in the Advanced section of Folder Redirection for My Documents.

it has \\myserver\home\%username%

I created the home share and it has everyone full control on the share
and file security.

When I logon as the user and I right click on My Documents on the local
machine, it is still showing C:\Documents and Settings\...

Is there anything else I should do to make it work? Should I do
anything to the user other than put him in the test_group?

Please tell me this. If in the profile of the user I do a home folder,
what is the difference other than it does not redirect everything there
automatically?

Thank you for any help.

Hi,

First of all, don’t do Folder Redirection on the Default Domain
Policy. Either create another OU and a GP on that OU or create a new
OU for Folder Redirection at the Domain level.

Folder redirection won’t work if there is no folder to redirect to.
The Best idea to make sure it is working is to go into the properties
of the user and on the Home Drive set to a Drive letter and put in
\myserverhome%username% This will create the users folder in the
home directory.

Also for Folder Redirection to work, you must have DNS setup correctly

Thank you. I got it to work by adding a different GP at the domain
level. Can I ask how what you are saying will help as far as setting
the Home Drive (Home Folder?). I just didn't get what you were saying.
I made the redirection work, but was thinking maybe I needed to do
something extra besides the Group Policy.

Just asking here, but why would I want to create an OU and a GP for
that OU, if I want it for the Domain, but limited for to certain
groups. For example, here, I put it at the topmost level mydomain.com.
I then just added the groups I wanted under that policy setting.

Thanks for insight.

Hi,

In the Account Properties of the user, there is a place to setup a
home directory. You put a drive letter (I use H: for all for "home")
and then the \servershare%username% Then when you click "OK" this
automatically changes %username% to the Users login name AND creates
the home folder in the \servershare directory with the
specificUser=Full Control, Administrators = Full Control (Windows 2000
= not inherited, Windows 2003 = inherits from above as well). Also
everytime a user logs in it maps their home directory to H:. I use
this as a backup failsafe. Even if my folder redirection fails to work
for some reason, the users can still access all their files on H:

With Windows 2003 because it inherits from above you need to make the
Permissions on the \servershare to be Administrators = Full Control,
Users = Read (This folder only).
Just asking here, but why would I want to create an OU and a GP for
that OU, if I want it for the Domain

Just out of habit, I don’t set any settings except Account Policies
and one or two startup scripts at the Domain Level. I just would
rather organize things via OU. However, I have 2400 Users and about
200 Groups so I have a need to make things more organized.

Cheers,

Lara
