You'll neva walk alone!

hi all,
i have this weird problem, when i go to my computer, click on any
drive and then any folder... when i click on tools i cant see the
'folder options' in the list!
My sys is WIN XP and is a Compaq laptop.
Please tell me what should i do since i have hidden a few files by
mistake

Your computer is infected by some viruses. you have to format your
system drive (generally C: drive) and reinstall the os. then u can see
what u want.

enjoyyyyyyyyy

is that the only option?

Have you ever been able to change folder options? The reason I ask is that
many laptop manufacturers "tweak" OSs to their own specs and may have small
differences from the actual retail copies of the same OS. Sometimes maleware
will cause some problems too, but that is a stretch.

This might sound strange, but it won't hurt; and it might fix your problem.

Install TweakuiXP and run the "Repair Icon" option.

I agree with the others, it's unusual. First try the suggestion about
looking for Folder Options in Control Panel. And the question "Have
you ever seen Folder Options?" is another good one. The suggestion
about a virus is possible too IMO. For a different problem, recently
someone suggested using System Restore, try that. Or maybe log on as
Administrator (a wild guess)?

By the way. The Folder Options should also exist under Tools in My
Computer, so you don't have to open an individual folder to find out.

Log in as administrator,if you still cant do folder options,
your installation is damaged.
If you can, you can unhide them.
Also, I have installed UNLOCKER,which adds an unlock option to
the right-click file menu's.
It tells you which software is responsible for locking which files,
and offers to unlock them.

@all
thanks fior ur responses,
i'm the administrator and i have logged in as the admin
i dont remember seeing the folder options icon in control panel too...
i tried both the view...

My question: i had heard about changing a value in the registry so
that folder options can be viewd... does anyone have any idea abt it?

If its a virus... do i have to format my c drive? (thats a bit
difficult for me sicne i gotta whole lot of work on my laptop... cant
waste time formatting it :( )

If you aren't seeing the folder options folder in control panel then clearly
something's been changed. Have you run anti-virus software?

yes i have run norton, avg and more.. but nothing found :(

The last thing I would do before starting irrevocable stuff would be to
google for restoring XP defaults. If nothing turned up, and I truly needed
to do a Repair Install of XP, and was fearful of losing my data, I would go
out and purchase a new hdd, install XP on it and hook up the former hdd that
had been my previous XP disk as a secondary drive. My second XP installation
should allow me to read all of the first installation's files (am I grasping
at straws?).

It may be a registry value that needs changed. Try this:

Run Regedit and back up the registry (just in case).
Then navigate to the following keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

If you find an entry called 'NoFolderOptions' in the right side area check
to see if its value is zero. If not, then set it to zero or delete it
altogether.

Make sure you check both keys above.
You may have to reboot. Anyway its worth a try.
