Folder name starting with .

Try to create a folder named .anything

All it says is "You must enter a file name".

This is killing me; I'm losing all weekend I need to be working.
 
XP does the same. Create the folder using cmd.exe. "Help" at the prompt
gives a list of commands.

It's because you haven't yet. A "." indicates the beginning of a file
extension, and thus some name must preceed the ".".

Then stop trying to do what you're doing and get back to work. There's no
workaround or trick, you cannot begin the name with a "." - period.

I'm certainly glad that Linux is more intelligent than that. A file is a
file and an "extension" doesn't mean anything. You can have directories or
files starting with . - no problem. You can also have a file named
a.b.c.d.e.f if you so wish.
 
I guess I should append that to state it is allowed under the command line,
but not from the gui. Been that way for a long time. The gui inteprets it as
an attempt to create a file, not a folder.

Then why don't you save some tim by spending less time creating new
threads for the same freaking problem!?
 
First of all, Windows Email screwed up and said I couldn't connect, so I
tried again.

It apparently lied, imagine that.
 
That's funny, because I have a boatload of folders in XP all starting with
"." and I did not have to access a command line prompt to get those there.
The folder in question, .xemacs, was created by the program installation, no
problem, in XP.
However, nothing seems to be working very well in Vista.
