I have run into a strange problem when entering the name for a new folder or
shortcut on the desktop (or in any other folder). I have also noticed the
same problem when renaming an existing folder. Normally, the sequence of
characters is displayed in the box underneath the folder icon as you type
them. However, I only see a few characters and then the character string
blanks out, displaying only one or two characters after that, until I enter
enough characters to spill over into the next line, in which case all
characters are displayed as usual. The number of characters displayed before
the problem occurs varies from 2 to 5 or 6. Wide letters ("a", "h", etc.)
show 2, whereas narrow characters ("i" or "f") display 5 or 6. This problem
only happens when the folder view is "Large Icons". The character string is
displayed normally in any other view ("Small Icon", "List", etc.)
If I log off, and log on as another user, the problem is not there; all
folder names enter and display normally in all views. I am not sure, but I
seemed to notice this problem after accidentally hitting a lot of keys around
the "insert/delete" part of the keyboard. I tried randomly entering some of
these keys but it did not solve the problem. I have encountered this problem
several times, and so far the only solution has been to reinstall Windows,
which seems a bit extreme. I have scanned my system for viruses, spyware,
etc. and there is no problem here. Help!! I am running Windows 2000 Pro on a
standalone home computer. I have noticed it with no service pack installed
and with Service Pack 4.
