Can anyone recommend a program that will allow me to create a folder, based
on a filename. I want to copy files to a new folder without me having to
name that folder myself. I currently have to hover with my mouse over the
file name, F2 as if renaming, copy the name to the clipboard and then create
a new folder, naming it by pasting the name I copied.

Thanks

you could use something like zipgenius or probably any zip/unzip program.

This might solve 1/2 your problem.

Do you still angry about the way to create a new folder with Windows 95
or Windows NT 4.0 Explorer? MDFolder is the solution. By clicking the
right mousebutton at the desired folder and choosing New Folder you
getting an new folder with a name of your choice!

Installation and Use
Just start the installation with right click on MDFolder.inf and choose
Install

MDFolder has been tested on Windows 95/98 and NT 4.0.

How it works
In Context Menu from the Explorer there is something new: New Folder.
Click it and you will get a dialog. Write down the name of the new
folder and enter OK. Now you have a new folder with this name at the
current directory or drive!

It's not easy to create a new folder with the explorer 95/NT. A faster
way with more opportunities provide MDFolder. Only one mouse click and
you have a new folder in the current folder or drive.

You don't need a program to do this....

The easy way:

Xteq System setup can install a "Create New Folder" option on the context menu..
Of course you still have to type in the name.. I believe it's under topic appearance...
It's just a registry entry...

The hard way:

But I think it should be easy enough to write a batch file that does much the same
thing - accepts the highlighted filename as input, strips off the extension and creates a
new folder using the path/filename. Then you could put that in the send to folder and use
send to to make the new folder and MOVE your file into it..

The various archive programs do this using context menu extensions for their respective
archives...

I'll have to see if I can find my dos manual, I'm certain it had an example to do just
that... I'll post it here if I can find it...

Take a look at Take Command (look it up in Google).

Thanks to all of you for the ideas on folder naming based on file name -
very helpful. I'll certainly look at take command. The easiest way so far
seems to be the suggestion of using a prog like Winrar, to create a folder
name as it rars, the rar can then be uncompressed to a folder name.

You see, these are long file names, often with a "complicated" structure
(file numbering, time etc), so that;s why I'm trying to automate it. So far
the Winrar approach seems the easiest and most accurate. I can't type in the
folder name by "hand" - there are far too many to do!

Thanks

Winrar, winace, and winzip all do this : I frequently use that very thing for storing
books - right click on the zip,rar whatever, and tell it unzip into
D:\very\long\and\complicated\file name path\with spaces\and other\strange characters

Then just drop the archive into the folder, hit F5 to alphabetize the folder and Viola,
filed and stored ready to read... The only typing is maybe an F2 to edit the name once
it's made.
