I came into administating a W2K Network environment in a
small office of about 10 workstations. Out of the ten,
one is WinME, one Win98 and the rest are all Win2KPro.
For some reasons, folders in my file server running on
Win2K Advance Server keep goin missing. There is no trace
deletion, no trace of intrution or anything. But these
things only happen to one user accessing the server from
the WinME workstation. I have ran a virus check with a
updated virus defination just today and there is no sign
of any virus. What is happening and can i recover that
folder as i have quite important files inside.

Not sure I can tell you what happened, and obviously the system itself just
doesn't delete files/folders because it feels like it, so some things you
can look at are or do might be;
check the recycle bin, but if it isn't there there isn't a utility we have
to un-delete files. However you might consider looking at some third party
options for an "un-delete" that might be available from Norton, web site at
shareware.com, or using a data recovery service.
You could also enable auditing to track the deletion of the folder to see if
you can determine who/what is doing it.
Set the acls on the folder/files to prevent deletion (not sure what perms
your users need here though so may not be possible)
Be sure that your AV is using the latest signature files, and run a
different flavor of AV as well, as some are better at picking up different
things than others (many times customers run one and fnd nothing but when
they run another one it finds things). There are some available at no cost
off the web that you might consider trying. I also assume that your running
the AV on the client as well as the server.
Don't know if multiple users use that one box or just one, so can't tell you
if it's something on the box itself, or if it's a user/s error (fat finger
accdential deletion stuff).
