In Outlook 2002 or later, you can set a different icon for any Outlook Bar shortcut programmatically.

When in doubt, check the object browser: Press ALt+F11 to open the VBA environment in Outlook, then press F2. Take a look at the OutlookBarShortcut.SetIcon method.
