Folder icons alternating between customized and default

I have customized my icons for the "regular folders" in Windows Explorer as
follows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Icons]
"3"="C:\\[path]\\Closed Folder.ico"
"4"="C:\\[path]\\Open Folder.ico"

After rebuilding icons with TweakUI, the nice looking new folders appear --
most of the time. They appear as specified when I open explorer.exe from the
[win]+E combination. Everything also looks fine when double-clicking "My
Documents" on the desktop, or right-clicking and selecting Explore.

However, when opening "My Documents" by clicking the relevant icon at the
top of XP Start Menu, the sub folders (below "My Documents") have the
default yellow look. This is also the case if I double-click or
right-click+Explore a short-cut to a(ny) folder on my harddrive or network -
folder icons are according to Windows default.

To make it even more strange: If I right-click the "My Documents" icon in
the start menu and select either Open or Explore, the customized icons
appear (again: if I just click "My Documents", default icons are used). This
behavior is similar for "My Network Places", "My Music", etc.

So it seems like Windows uses two alternating icon schemes, depending on how
I open or browse to a folder. Needless to say; I want explorer to use my
customized folders always, in all windows and dialog boxes displaying normal
folder icons.

This is a Dell Inspiron 5150 with an NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200, in case that
matters.

Can anyone help?

The simple version:

- When I click Start and then (left) click either My Documents, My Pictures,
My Music, My Computer or My Network Places, the window that appears has sub
folder shown with standard (yellow) Windows XP icons
- When I click Start and then right click either My Documents, My Pictures,
My Music, My Computer or My Network Places, and select Open (or Explore)
from the context menu, the window that appears has sub folder shown with
customized icons (specified in registry - see OP)

Can anyone think of an explanation to this?
