I'm looking for a free (of course) program that will allow me to easily
change the folder icon in Windows 98.

Thanks, in an advance.

Chet

Thanks for the reply. I downloaded and installed it. Worked my way through
it and when in the program it looked like the icon pic I wanted applied to
my desktop folder was what I wanted. There was no option to "apply" or
anything. Only thing I found was to "X" out the program. Net result no
change in the icon !!!

Am I missing something? How do you get your choice to take effect?

Thanks.

Chet

Neither one of the programs seem to want to change the icon on a group I
have on my desktop. With Ms Burgher's program, I can change icons on the
various directories, but NOT on icons that are loaded on my desktop. Any
thoughts?? (Did a reboot)

Thanks.

I use "ChangeIcon"; but I don't believe you can use it to change
System folders like "my Computer", My Documents", etc. Look in the
Control panel; Display; Effects tab. You should be able to change those
from there.

Trout,
O, how right you are!!! In a few seconds after reading your post I had my
problem solved. Thank you.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to correct the problem that arose
after running one of those two previously mentioned programs, i.e. every
time I turn the machine off I get the BSOD. Darn, I wish you had replied a
few minutes earlier!!!!

Thanks.

Bummer. The only thing I can think of to suggest is that you check
your icon properties, and in Windows Explorer, to make sure you haven't
changed the path to the desktop shortcuts, or accidentally created
duplicate folders that are confusing your computer.
In a worst-case scenario; you could try doing a scanreg/restore.

Works on my systems. To change an individual folder icon, go to the
"Directories" screen (there is a "Folders" screen which just changes
the defaults for all folders). Highlight the folder name for which you
want to change the icon, then click the "Change Icon" button to select
a new icon.

If it doesn't change immediately, reboot your system and see if that
doesn't force Windows to recognize the new icon.

A "multi-resolution" icon which contains the various standard sizes
and colors usually works best.

Are you talking about plain Jane shortcut icons (not "workspace" like "My
Docs")? If so, you need nothing other than Windows...

Right click
Properties
Change icon
