Folder Entry

When I open an Outlook folder, none of the items are active. I need to click on one of them to activate it and only then am I able to navigate. For example, when I click on Contacts, the folder opens but nothing happens if I type, say, the letter s to get to the names starting with s. I need to first click on one of the names to activate it, then when I type s, it will move to the first entry starting with s. I have Outlook 2002 on XP. With the Outlook 2000/Win98 that I have on another computer, the first or most recent item is automatically active when I open a folder. Is there any way to fix this?

I believe that problem was introduced in Outlook 2002. It appears to still
exist in OL 2003.
