I am running Windows XP and it doesn't recognise that I have a floppy drive.
I recently tried out a mate's Harddrive in my computer which, in hindsight,
may have had a virus. Could this be the cause? I have put my HDD back but
how do I sort out recognition of my floppy drive?

- Does the BIOS see the floppy disk?
- Can you boot from a floppy disk?
- Did you reconnect all the cables?
 
I don't know if the BIOS sees the floppy disk. How can I tell? I have not
got a floppy disk to boot from but if I put any floppy in the drive I do not
get the usual grunching as I used to get when it read it in the past.
I did not have to open the case of the computer as I have a caddy that I use
if I need to swop HDDs so I did not have to disconnect any cables.

Go into the BIOS setup and see if a floppy drive is specified correctly.
Almost all require you to specify the type (i.e. 3-1/2inch 1.44 meg).
Make sure that floppy seek on bootup is specified, usually on the
second page. You can also set errors so it will halt if the floppy
drive is not found. It will then halt and give you an error message if
it can't find it. When you boot you should see the light on the drive
and here the drive seek. You can also set the boot device sequence
to put the floppy first. Then put any floppy in the drive and it should
halt and ask for a bootable floppy.
 
If you put an ordinary floppy disk into the drive while
booting, and if the drive works, then your machine
won't boot up. This tells you that the floppy disk
drive works.
