floppy won't recognize disk

My floppy drive used to work fine but won't now. When I insert a used disk
(with or without data, doesn't matter) and then try to access the disk, a
message says "please insert a disk into drive A," but the disk is already
there!? The device manager says that the A drive is working correctly. I've
noted that no lights blink on the A drive front panel, and that it takes
about 5 seconds to register the above message. I have even replaced the A
drive and get the same message. My drivers are supposedly up to date. I'm
using Windows XP, home edition

Any help would be appreciated.

Try the links below

I've got the same problem on two different computers, both
running XP. I checked the folder options and everything
is okay there.

This started a couple of weeks ago. I did run the Network
Wizard. Not sure if that caused a problem. Or was there
a Microsoft update that's been causing some problems?

I have tried the links below, as I have EXACTLY the same
problem. Floppy used to work - doesn't any more; device
manager reports everything is perfect! No solution found
in the links suggested, I am afraid. Found an extended
discussion on what sounds to be the same problem with all
sorts of solutions (hardware, software, cables etc) tried
at

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Q_20421446.html

tho' with W2K. No solution there either.

The only thing that has changed between getting the
machine, when the floppy worked, and when it stopped
working, was to install Windows "updates". Could one of
those have caused the problem???
