Am running WinXP. Whenever I try to access a floppy disk
in Drive A I get a message that the disk is not formatted
and do I want to format now.

All the floppies I have tried to access are not only
formatted, but have information on them. Of course,
can't format (it's already formatted anyway) because that
would erase what's on the floppy.

Any idea what's happening and how to correct?

Your old floppy drive has some wear and tear or even slight
damager to the alignment of the arm.

When drives cost a bundle and labor was cheap, these were
repaired.

Today you can buy a floppy drive for $10-20 and replace it
yourself.

Should solve your problem.

check for drivers of the floppy drive, make sure they are
digitally signed by microsoft. Also, I advise to shut
down system, then try reading the floppy, if it still
doesnt work, I would call it a "faulty Drive"
