Floppy Drive Problem

I have put an old 2001 floppy drive into my 2006 computer and it won't
recognize it. Usualy something will come up in my computer, but I am not
getting anything. I went back and made sure everything was plugged in and
still got nothing. There is nothing to install for the drive so I don't lnow
what to do.
 
Was this a replacement for an already installed floppy drive?

Has the drive been enabled in the computer's bios.

With the power turned on to the computer, what happens when you place a
floppy in the drive. Do you hear it starting to spin the disk.
Are you sure that you plugged in the data cable correctly. It is easy to
reverse the ribbon cable on a floppy drive. When the computer is turned on
is the drive light on all the time? If so the ribbon cable has been
reversed.

Does the drive "buzz (initial access)" when you first turn on the computer
when a floppy is in the drive?
 
This is the first floppy drive in this computer.
Nothing happens when a floppy disk is placed in it. The disk doesn't spin.
I am pretty sure it is in the right way. Will try switching it and let you
know later.
The light on the drive randomly comes on and off, it doesn't matter if there
is a floppy disk in it or not.
As before the floppy drive does nothing.

Could the ribbon cable being old have any effect, because the cable is from
my old computer aswell as the floppy drive?

Nothing is supposed to happen when you put a floppy in the drive

(Maybe you've had previous experience with a MAC)

You need to browse over to the A: drive using Windows explorer


If the cable was reversed, the light would be on all the time.

Also: You do need to enable the device in the bios

Your question does not belong HERE. This has nothing to do with the
OS - it is a purely hardware problem.

Ask elsewhere
 
I can't think of a group more suited to his question than this one, he's
using XP, and has a problem with a piece of hardware, and this is the XP
hardware group. Where in your infinite wisdom would you suggest he post?
 
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I've been away.

Since the light does come on the power cable is correct. Since the drive
light is not on all the time, the cable should be plugged in correctly.
Since it is the first floppy drive in the computer, in all likelihood the
floppy controller is turned off in the computer's bios. If the drive is
turned on in the computer's bios, you should see the drive in Drive
Management.

The ribbon cable for the floppy is narrower than the ribbon cable that goes
to the CD/DVD or hard drive with the individual wires approximately the same
size as the wires in the old style 40 wire data cable for CD drives but just
less wires. Does the floppy drive have a pin and socket connector (the same
type of connector as those used on the hard drive) setup or is it a blade
type of connector? There will also be a twist of a few wires in the end of
the cable that attaches to the drive. I have had problems in the past
getting one of the old style blade connector floppies to be recognized in
Disk Management on newer machines. Don't know why since most time they are
functionally identical as the newer pin and socket connector. There are
newer motherboards out there that do not have a floppy controller built into
them.
