Hi there,

I am having a problem with my floppy drive at the moment and I am at my wits
end.

Every time I go to read a floppy disk I get the message 'disk is not
formatted, would you like to format now'.

This only started about 1 month ago, and up to this point, I had no trouble
accessing my floppy disks.

This is happening even with formatted disks.
Due to this, I cannot read any of my floppys and therefore cannot get to the
data on them.

I am running Windows XP Pro

I have even bought a new floppy drive, but this is still happening.

Can someone please point me in the right direction with regards to this, I
just cannot understand why this has started happening.

Cheers

Jason Mckee.

Floopy drives are so cheap that they are made quite badly. A pretty good
percentage malfunciton in this and other ways. Go spend 10 bucks on a
new floop and see if it does anything different. Most likely it will work
fine.

Did you try another floppy cable?

Take the new floppy drive you bought back to the store and tell them it
doesn't work with your motherboard. Trade it in for a different brand. You
might have to do this several times until you find one that works. I've had
the problem and don't think it is the OS since I use Win98. My board didn't
like the old floppy and a more modern one was the fix.

I have the same problem. When I'm running 98SE or Mandrake (triple-boot
machine) the floppy works just fine, when I'm in XP Pro it always tells me
the disk isn't formatted. I just live with it.

Sorry, not a very helpful reply.

If you have a bootable floppy, e.g., DOS 6.22 or Win98 emergency boot
diskette, boot your computer from it. If it boots, try reading and
writing to the diskette. If that works, you can conclude that the
hardware is working.

Likely started happening because you updated WinXP, or it updated
itself.
