when you inserrt a disk and ty to copy to it I get the
messqge that the disk is not formatted.

If I try and delete a file the message is that the the
disk is write protected .

I have tried numerous disks and different manufacturers
and the disks will work in other machines. I found one
disk that I can write to but not delete.

This is a new Dell, P4 machine.

By all means, contact DELL technical support. I have had
defective floppy drives, and they sent me a replacement
right away, as long as the machine is under warranty. If
it is no longer under warranty, you can get a
replacement for around $12 (Sony, Teac, Samsung are
popular).

If you have worked inside the PC recently, you may want
to check that the grey signal cable is properly seated in
the connector on the floppy and on the motherboard.

It is unlikely that you have write-protected the floppy
drive in the BIOS, but check to be sure.
