Hi,

This one is from the dumpster, and the case is dented. Looks like it was a
projectile
at some point in time. Anyway, it's now stable running XP, but it has two
problems.
One is the keyboard ps2 port doesn't work, but i asked about that in a
previous post,
and it works fine with a usb keyboard.

The other is the 3.5 inch drive. I haven't replaced the cable, so it may be
that, but
i did replace the drive with a known good one to no avail. What happens is,
when
windows goes to read a disk it says the disk isn't formatted, and if i tell
it to format
it, it says the disk can't be formatted. This is so regardless of what disk
is in it, with
or without data, formatted or not. I use windows commander for file
management
and it just says there is no disk in the drive.

any ideas much appreciated.

Yes. 3.5" floppies are dead. Unplug the drive, set it to non in the
BIOS and forget about it.

That may have killed the ps2 port if it say fell off a
bench with the keyboard connector plugged in etc.

It might have been the fault that saw it binned.

Thats the problem with stuff from dumpsters, there will always be some
dumped because they had a serious fault that wasnt economic to fix.

You presumaby did check that the cable hasnt
just come off the motherboard connector partially ?

Also worth checking that its been installed properly at the motherboard
end, some motherboards use unshrouded headers so it isnt hard to put
that connector on one row or column off, so its not connected properly.

I think that the mother--board is faulty, because I have the almost same
problem,my bios recognizes the floppy as being there, shows up when I
access the computer drives,(like c,d,e, A) but won't read.it says
please insert disk. I have tried everything new drive new cable new
disk but nada. so I guess it must be the drive controller in the board
is bad. I am using an external drive for now. win xp,duron 1000,740
ram,A7V rev1.02 m/b.
