I get an

a: drive error

on startup.

I've swapped 3 different drives and cables and can't seem to clear the
problem.

The drive light stays on but the drive is not accessible.

I've gone thru the bios and can't find any problems. Everything else runs
fine.

What am I missing?

The cable may be reversed, swap one end.

There is a red side on the ribbon cable. It should go to the No1 pin on the
drive and the same at the mother board. Do you have the cable connected
correctly?

I've done all that stuff. The floppy drive works now, however the floppy and
C drive are in

"compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance"
& using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system

I just built a system using win98se and it's been a long time since I fooled
around with autoexec and configsys files.

I'm sure it's a matter of getting win98 to use it's drivers but I forgot the
trick.

Any ideas?

I have thought about upgrading it to windows ME or just formatting the drive
and reinstalling 98se again. But both are time consuming.

I don't mean to be snippy but, this is an XP newsgroup. I know it says
hardware but, it is meant to deal with XP hardware matters not building
computers in general.

LOL, JAX

Well, excuse me I thought hardware was hardware. I guess there's xp
hardware and then there's all the other hardware!

XP has it's own hardware issues, that is what this XP group is dedicated to.
You can find other newsgroups that are for general hardware.
