Floppy drive chatters at shut down

I have P4, 3.2GHZ, 512M, 160GB HP PC. Upon shut down the PC
seems to seek a floppy in A: drive, there is quite a bit of
chattering for several seconds---putting in a floppy
causes an apparent write to the floppy and stops the noise
and shut down proceeds normally.I am using WINXP HOME and
MSOFFICE Student Version. Can anyone help with this? Thanks
